What Is Emergency Dentistry?

Emergency dentistry is immediate dental care for urgent dental problems to relieve pain and prevent worsening oral health issues, infections, tooth loss, and other health complications.

Treatment may involve various restorative treatments like dental crowns to protect broken teeth, extractions for impacted wisdom teeth, root canals for infections, deep cleanings for gum disease, tooth splints to reattach knocked-out teeth, fillings for large cavities, and tooth restorations like dental implants to replace missing teeth.

We won't leave you in pain at New Tempo Family Dental while you wait in dental limbo for the next available appointment. You'll be seen immediately, get pain relief, and a diagnosis so we can formulate a treatment plan.

Benefits Of An Emergency Dental Appointment

Pain Relief

A tooth injury, impacted wisdom teeth, or an infection can all be excruciating. We will numb your mouth so you don't feel discomfort anymore, and we'll treat the source of the pain for long-term relief.

Prevention

By seeking urgent emergency care, you prevent worsening issues like the spread of infection to the other teeth or through the bloodstream. Many dental emergencies are time-sensitive, and must receive treatment immediately to avoid serious consequences. Emergency dentistry is here to preserve the health of your existing teeth to prevent even more invasive dental work.

Restore Tooth Functionality

Eating, speaking, and smiling are difficult when you're in pain, dealing with swelling, or have a missing tooth. Emergency dentistry will repair or replace your teeth so you can get back to everyday life without disruptions.

Our Dental Emergency Process: What To Expect

Consultation

Dr. Leonett will examine your teeth and take digital scans to rule out oral health problems that would disqualify you as a candidate for teeth whitening. Then, she will take note of the severity of your discoloration.

Treatment Plan

Dr. Leonett will have an open and honest conversation about how you feel about your smile. How white do you want your teeth to be and how soon do you want to achieve this? Other factors such as if you have sensitive teeth will be taken into account when creating your treatment plan. We will make a recommendation about what whitening treatment is best for you.

In-Office Whitening

A cheek protractor will be placed in your mouth to keep your teeth exposed and we will apply a protective gel to your gums to prevent contact between your delicate soft tissues and the whitening product. Then, the whitening gel is applied to each tooth and activated with UV light. After about an hour, we will rinse out the treatment and you will see instant results.

Take-Home Whitening

You will need to come in for a quick appointment so we can take impressions of your teeth that are sent to an outside lab that will use them as a mold for your custom-made whitening trays.

After applying the gel to the inside of the trays and placing them over your teeth, you will wear these each day for the allotted time specified in the directions for 2 weeks.

Maintenance

Once you have achieved the tooth shade that you were aiming for through whitening, you will want to avoid contact with stains which can negatively affect your results. By attending regular dental cleanings every 6 months, you will help to maintain your white teeth. Over time, you may eventually need another whitening touch-up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do not panic in a dental emergency since dental emergencies are perfectly normal and can be addressed if you follow the right steps. Next, you should never hold a knocked-out tooth by the crown or you might damage the delicate cells on the root.

Don't use a sharp object to remove anything stuck in your teeth or in the wound following an injury to the teeth or mouth. Additionally, avoid ignoring the dental emergency or choose to self-diagnose and self-medicate. You’ll do much better in the hands of a professional emergency dentist who’ll address the dental emergency promptly.

The first thing to do if your child’s teeth fall out is to keep calm. A level head will help you better assess the situation and take the right steps. Plus, it’s worth noting that children's teeth sometimes fall out naturally and you have nothing to be worried about.

Once calm, gently pick up the tooth by the crown (avoiding the root) and rinse it with cold running water. Try to reinsert the tooth by pushing it back in place and asking your cold to bite in a piece of cloth to keep it secured. If restoring the tooth is impossible, store the tooth in a glass of milk and contact an emergency dentist for the next step.

An emergency dentist might be necessary if you knock out one of your teeth in an accident, fall, or fight. If you get to the dentist within an hour of losing your tooth, they may be able to put it back in place.

You’ll also need an emergency dentist if you severely chip one or more teeth, to the point that it exposes the nerve fibers in the tooth canals. The same goes if you have a large dental abscess or a severe toothache immune to painkillers. Incessant bleeding in the gums is also a sign you should contact an emergency dentist.

A dental emergency is any dental complication that causes excruciating pain, profuse bleeding, or could spiral into something much worse without immediate treatment. Dental emergencies differ from regular dental conditions in that they require immediate or almost immediate treatment. Failure to which, they could get out of hand and lead to more severe complications that are expensive to treat.

Unlike regular dental issues, dental emergencies don’t require prior appointments. Emergency dentists work around the clock to respond to emergency dental issues on short notice, including during weekends, holidays, and late hours.
